WRITE A POINT OF VIEW ON THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT.

Write about 100-150 words.

'We should not waste money exploring outer space when so much of our own planet offers "strange new worlds" for us to explore.'

Basically, the topic is derived from the following news article by Malcolm Holland, below.

ROBOT SUBS UNCOVER A STRANGE NEW WORLD

DOZENS of previously unknown species have been discovered living clustered around boiling hot volcanic vents in the sea floor near Antarctica.

Creatures such as yeti crabs, starfish, barnacles, sea anemones, and potentially a new species of pure-white octopus have been found on the sea floor almost 2.5km deep, living in temperatures up to 382C, and without light. Until the recent discovery of animals which call the vents home, scientists believed that almost all life on Earth depended on sunlight.

But the discovery by researchers from the University of Oxford, University of Southampton and the British Antarctic Survey has given new hope for life on other planets lacking sunlight and solar warmth.

The creatures were found by robot submarines on the East Scotia Ridge deep beneath the Southern Ocean near Antarctica.

Professor Alex Rogers, from Oxford University's Department of Zoology, who led the research, said "hydrothermal vents are home to animals found nowhere else on the planet that get their energy not from the sun but from breaking down chemicals, such as hydrogen sulphide.

"The first survey of these particular vents have revealed a hot, dark, 'lost world' in which whole communities of previously unknown marine organisms thrive."

You have to look at and compare the benefits of exploring space versus exploring the areas of the Earth that have gone undiscovered and unresearched. The article establishes some pretty interesting info about the creatures discovered near the thermal vents at the bottom of the ocean, like how they do not rely on the sun for energy. On the other hand, space offers its own array of unknowns that can be studied. So the question you have to answer (by either disagreeing or agreeing with the statement) is whether of not humnaity should explore the unknowns closer to our home or continue to attempt to venture out into other universes.
