What is a multisensory approach when helping a student with dyslexia?

When working with students with dyslexia, there are various ways to address their needs without singling them out from their peers. Whole class activities are excellent ways to address inclusion issues. Including the four modalities of learning, visual, tactile, auditory and kinesthetic, are recognized good practices in education.

Some kids learn by writing in cursive too. Also I have use those “10” blocks what we called them. I worked at a tutoring service. But it helped them with math skills. I have found dyslexia kids are more hands on kiddos.

Multisentory learning is a tool to address the different learning style of dyslexia. It helps them remember what they are being taught by using all of the senses they use every day, such as hearing, vision and touch. Adding kinesthetic activities would also be effective. An example would be making a card for someone they care about. The steps would be to first talk over what they want to say with a classmate. Then they would cut apart large paper letters and arrangement them into their message. After this they would glue the words onto construction paper and decorate. Lastly, they could show and read the card to the class. All students would enjoy this activity.

Students experiencing dyslexia also benefit from learning various coping skills such as extensive detailing, memory aids (e.g. mnemonic devices...) and mental picture coaching.
