When analyzing a passage or reading, there are several strategies available for analyzing however I have found that the most effective to aid in comprehension and retention are as follows:
- Imagery - the reader must create a visual representation of the reading
- Figurative language - represents objects or actions that appeal to the physical senses. Identify throughout the passage/reading and ask "why did the author use this" "how does it help me understand what is being state?"
- Make connections - text to text, text to self, text to world. Make a connection with elements, actions, characters or words within the passage.
- Inferences - an educated guess. Before, during, and after reading infer what will happen next, why is this happening, how does this action/situation affect the overall plot or main character.
- Synthesize - put all the information together to gleam a deeper meaning of the purpose of the passage and the delivery of the text.
Hope this helps you analyze future readings.
