An effective way to summarize a reading comprehension passage is to analyze the main components needed to develop a story. A reader should focus on the main idea (theme) of the story. What is the story about? A rule of thumb to always remember is that, within every story that is created, you will find the introduction; the setting/background (where a story takes place); the plot of the story (what is the story about) and the climax (the highly anticipated event) that brings the story to an end (close). Also, when establishing an effective summary, you want to make sure that you include what the narrator (author) is trying to convey to his or her audience. Basically, what is the author's message (or intent) in writing the story? Is the story about love and romance, is it an eventful adventure, is the story comical,or is it serious and/or melancholy? In addition, while composing your summary, you will also want to include the Five W's: - The who, what, when, why, and where aspect that will aid in helping you develop your summary as well. Lastly, another helpful tip to utilize, is not to become overwhelmed when trying to write your summary. One great way to avoid the confusion is by brainstorming and or formulating an outline that will help keep your writing well-planned and organized. Both of these aforementioned concepts will help you remain focused and on task and help you not divert from the main idea (theme) of your summary.

An effective summary is one that is able to clearly state the main idea of an article without taking the article's meaning out of context. The main things you have to focus on is making sure that your summary answers the WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHO, WHY and HOW of the passage or reading. These are the 5Ws and 1H rule. Ask yourself after reading the passage, what is the main point of this passage, where and when do the events take place (setting), who are the characters, why did the author say what he said, how does the author communicates his or her ideas. When you recognize the structure and main idea of the passage, you will have no problem writing your summary. Ask these questions while you read the passage, that way, when you write your summary, you wont side track or miss the main point of the passage that you are summarizing. Use your own words to summarize the passage, this will help you understand the passage in depth. Keep it short and simple. Hope this helps.
