At this time, Sigmund Freud was one of many scientists studying the mind/neurology, and what would later be called psychoanalysis and psychology. Early studies began with the hope of curing female 'hysteria' and other mental illnesses. He wrote and published many papers discussing, for the time, shocking new theories, including discussions of sexuality. At a time when European society was very proper and rigid, these theories were immediately popular because it offered people a reason behind their internal struggles and justified them, as well as allowed for society as a whole to become more sympathetic and open.
