According to the California Trail Interpretive Center, between the years of 1841 and 1869, it is estimated that over 250,000 people traversed the California Trail. So, if we estimate that each wagon transported an average of 5 or 6 people, we can conclude that about 41,000 to 51,000 wagons traveled the California trail in the mid-1800s. If the average number of people per wagon was lower (around 4 people per wagon), the estimate rises to over 62,000 total wagons.
