Syntax is the rules for constructing sentences in a language. Does the language put its adjectives before the noun or after? Does the subject go before or after the predicate?

In English, syntax describes rules such as:

-articles can only go in front of a noun

-a preposition must have an object (or implied object)

-sentences can go on forever and still be "grammatical"
