Syntax relates to the ways that words are combined to create meaningful phrases and sentences. Languages are made up of several levels starting with sounds. The study of the sounds that occur in the language is called phonology. Sounds are combined to create meanings. The study of meaningful units in the language is called morphology. Combining the meaningful units into meaningful utterances is call syntax.
Rules of grammar are related to syntax. In English sentences generally follow a Subject Verb Object (SVO) order. The boy has a dog. In this sentence "The boy" is the subject. "Has" is the verb. And, "a dog" is the object.
