In a historical perspective, the Icelandic people largely kept to themselves. Being on an island meant that, without the possibility of importing any goods over land, the farmers needed to live off of what they could yield from the land, and nothing more. Though many a laborer worked in order to provide for what was a comparatively small population, they needed to preserve what they grew, because importing food for even a population of their size was impractical. The reign of many kings saw no major changes to the farming and agriculture structure in the country until the invention of long range sea travel. Even though there were many glaciers, the sailors were proficient in their work, and could now safely travel the North Atlantic to reach Iceland. When the long range sea travel system was built, the Icelandic people gained the ability to import anything they could ever need.
