I need help finding cultural evidence in the book Norwegian Wood.

So I am supposed to read the book Norwegian Wood, which I did and figure out the culture that is depicted within the novel and compare it to my own. But the problem is I can't find specific culture references in the book

Like you do not get the student protests of the '60's? This particularly in Japan (would that culture be different from yours?).
