Football helmets cover the entire braincase and provide a lot of protection to the player's head. However, concussions are still very common in football. The brain is made of soft nervous tissue and is surrounded by a layer of spinal fluid. When a football player collides with another player/ground/etc the impact can jolt the brain and cause it to move around inside your head. Traumatic brain injuries, like concussions, can cause bruising, damage to the blood vessels, and injury to the nerves.

 

Why do you think concussions are still a health concern in football, even though the football helmet is very protective?

The helmet will protect against the physical impact of the head/skull with the ground, another helmet, and other such items. But it DOES NOT mitigate the whiplash that the head experiences, and this is ultimately what causes the concussion and the TBI.
