My approach to tutoring is a very simple one: teach the basics in a way the student "relates" and understands. I do not believe in rote memorization. Chemistry and Math are disciplines that build from the basics. I do NOT do homework for students, but will assist them as they work through the assignments on their own.

Outside of the classroom, I am an avid sports fan enjoying golf, football, basketball, etc.

Subjects

Elementary Education

Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Elementary Math is probably the most critical subject in mathematics because it sets the stage for all other math courses. My approach is to make sure the student truly grasps the concepts involved, and does not just "memorize" the processes or procedures that are used to achieve the correct answers to problems.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

My approach to teaching algebra is similar to that used in teaching other subjects. I try to impart an understanding of the fundamentals, with logic and reasoning, and shy away from memorization, unless necessary.
Biology,

Biology

I have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and have taught Chemistry, Biology and Pharmacology at the University level. I have done independent research in Biochemistry and Biology, and have a good knowledge of Biology and how it relates to the cell, and the organism.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

High school and college level general chemistry (inorganic), introductory chemistry, and analytical chemistry are some of the areas in which I can help. I approach tutoring Chemistry from a point of view where I explain concepts in an easy to understand manner, and supplement what the text book has to offer. I have had great success with all of the students I have assisted.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

My approach to pre-algebra is slightly different from what the text books cover. This gives the student a "second" way of working out the problems and an alternate way of trying to understand the basis of the various operations.

Nursing

Nursing

Nursing involves many disciplines, including math, chemistry, pharmacy, pharmacology, anatomy, and many others. I try to integrate all of the life sciences and math into my approach in assisting nursing students so that they might gain a full and complete understanding of the concepts being studied. I have a background in Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Life Sciences, which makes me uniquely qualified to integrate all of these subjects into the field of Nursing.

Great tutor

My daughter is learning a lot with J.R and says she enjoys her tutoring sessions! She says he explains things better than her chemistry teacher. Looking forward to future sessions.

Great tutor

J.R. is very knowledgeable and patient. He prepares well before the lesson and explains clearly. My daughter thinks he is the best!

Tutor responded:

Thank you Emily. Working with your daughter has been a delight, and I look forward to assisting her in the future, should the need arise.

Excellent and responsive Chemistry tutor

J.R. contacted us and arranged an appointment quickly. He seems flexible in his schedule. While my daughter didn't need as much help as we thought, she felt that J.R. had a very good way of explaining Chemistry concepts. He spent the time going over the practice problems she was given. We would definitely contact him again for assistance!

Excellent experience

My son had a review lesson with JR today. We scheduled the lesson very efficiently using the website, with relatively short notice and over the weekend. The teacher was prompt and effective. My son he was concerned that he did not understand the concepts in class (electro thermo chemistry) and felt very reassured after the lesson. JR reviewed the concepts and solved problems with him; all his questions were answered. We plan to take additional lessons prior to his AP exam. Excellent teacher.

Tutor responded:

Thank you for your kind words. It was indeed a pleasure working with your son, and I look forward to working with him again in the future. I'm sure he'll do very well in his Chemistry class.

Very knowledgeable

I highly recommend J.R. as an outstanding chemistry tutor. I have met with him three times to work through practice tests before the three chemistry exams this semester. He explains concepts very well and he showed me multiple ways to solve several of the problems. Because of J.R.'s help, I have scored well on the exams. If you want to improve your chemistry grade, call J.R.!

Highly Recommend

I'll never forget my daughter's sense of relief after just one tutoring sessions with J.R. She stated, "NOW I get it!" 'Nuff said!

Very patient and great at explaining challenging material

My teacher at school even noticed a difference once I got a tutor. He is willing to work with you until you truly understand the material. He allows you to work out the problem on your own, so you can know how to do it when you are taking the test. Great tutor overall!

Patient, kind, and knows his chemistry!

Dr. J.R. S. and I have met a couple of times and he has helped me tremendously. He has a way of relating the topics down to something I can grasp. I was so far behind in my chemistry class, but with his help, I can come out of this class with knowledge and not just questions. I might even be able to squeeze a "B" out of it! I highly recommend him! He is excellent!

Great Tutor with emphasis on foundation building

Dr. J.R.S. is a great tutor who emphasizes the foundation building in learning chemistry. We wanted my daughter to enjoy learning chemistry and to think of her career in chemistry or chemistry-related area. In her first semester of chemistry class, she was doing well and she had confidence in her chemistry. But my daughter was having difficulties in her 2nd semester chemistry class. We could see that she was losing interest in chemistry and about to give it up. We wanted to find someone who can help her re-ignite her interest in chemistry. And we found Dr. J.R.S. In our first meeting Dr. J.R.S. asked a few questions to my daughter on how she was feeling about chemistry and was doing in her chemistry class. We immediately knew we found the perfect tutor for my daughter: My daughter admitted that she had difficulties in grasping the concept of chemistry and was just memorizing the contents in her chemistry class. Dr. J.R.S. teaching method is to let his student understand/build foundation of chemistry, not just to develop a quick problem-solving technique. My daughter finished her chemistry class with great grade. But most importantly, thanks to Dr. J.R.S., she regained her confidence in chemistry.
