At that time in history, Israel was in revolt against Roman rule. Rome had crushed most of the rebellion, but surviving rebels relocated to the fortress of Masada and hunkered down. Eventually, they were surrounded by Roman forces, which began a siege of Masada. When it looked like defeat was imminent, the rebels chose suicide over surrendering to the Romans. It was a matter of preferring to die as free men over living as slaves under Roman rule.
