Six dollars remained. How many dollars did Joe have originally?

P - 3P/4 = P/4  left after spend
 
p/4 - ( p/4 * 3p/4) = P/16    / portion of original money left

Ok . I did not see the bottom part $6 left
 
 So now you let 1/16 of money left equal to $6 , and find out what was the amount of the whole money.
  ( Very Simple)
 
 P/16 = 6
 
   P = 16(6 ) = $96
