In this book there were two groups: those whose god is money and those whose god is an actual deity. To be brief, colonization was motivated by economics and decolonization occurred in response to independence movements in those colonized territories. Knowing the characters, you can list and sort through those who were forced to endure external suffering and those who endured internal suffering on their own psyche, and then determine causation.
Example: Hashim rationalizes amoral behavior and greed to his wife in the book, I believe he said moneylenders assigning a 71 percent interest rate [which is egregiously high and a rip-off] was to teach people the value of money. How?! At that rate you're forever be in debt. Someone who tries to convincingly disguise greed as altruism and ensure dependency of his own territory would be which of the two categories you mentioned? Do this for all the characters!
