It would be clearer with properly placed punctuation. "Killing an animal oneself is, more often than not, a way to forget the problem while pretending to remember."
I'm not sure about the context, but it seems the author is trying to explain some psychology.
It would be better to rephrase the sentence: "More often than not, killing an animal oneself is a way to forget the problem while pretending to remember."
