- Lack of Proper Preparation:
- When the Pilgrims arrived off Cape Cod on November 11, 1620, they were ill-prepared for the harsh conditions they encountered. They had spent five weeks blundering along the cape, wasting valuable time.
- Solution: Eventually, they located the harbor already known to Captain John Smith as Plymouth. There, they founded the first permanent colony in New England under the name of New Plimoth. Despite their initial blunders, they managed to establish a settlement.
- Failure to Learn About Native Inhabitants:
- The Pilgrims made no discernible effort to learn about the Native American tribes inhabiting the region before their arrival. This lack of knowledge directly contributed to a 50 percent mortality rate during the first winter.
- Solution: Unlike the Pilgrims, the Native leaders, particularly those from the Wampanoag tribes, had better information about the English. An adviser to Massasoit, the chief of the Wampanoag confederacy, had lived in London and understood the goals and vulnerabilities of the English colonial adventurers. The Native leaders were better prepared to handle the alien invaders1.
