The Earth's atmosphere blocks many types of radiation, including infrared and X-rays.
By using "space telescope" on a satellite above the atmosphere these radiations can be seen and studied.
Infrared and X-ray (and other) wavelengths bring new/different information about what is happening in
the universe.
