I had to read "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses" by Mark Twain, and for this assignment, my teacher asked us some questions to think about before writing about this reading. I am posting this because I do not understand some of them, and quite frankly, I'm not sure I understood this reading. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
1. In what ways is Natty Bumpo familiar/similar to later American heroes?
2. How does Cooper's writing prefigure tensions between civilization/development and nature/wilderness?
3. Comment on Cooper's style.
4. How does the civilization/wilderness tension illustrate aspects of American freedom and identity?
