How are Handmaids portrayed in the Handmaids tale?

What arguments can you make on how they are portrayed?

It has been a while since I read it, but they were portrayed as only useful to have babies and not really independent people. They were more of a servant of the wife than a person on their own. Their only purpose was to have the babies of the important men. Even then the wife got the credit not the handmaid.
