I'm guessing the actual form of the statement whose purpose I'm also assuming you need to declare as "to inform" or "to persuade" is something like "In the late 1600s the average person in the New World died of old age in his mid fifties."* This is a statement of fact, based presumably on historical demographic statistics or research and thus meant to inform; there is no indication of an argument or opinion that needs to be supported, as would be the case if the purpose were to persuade.

*And though this might not be in the original statement, modern sensibilities would require you to replace his with his or her or his/her, or reverse the order of these gendered pronouns to be even more self-consciously attuned to current trends, or recast the sentence in a way to obviate any hint of sexism in a manner like "In the late 1960s people on average died of old age in their mid fifties."
