Passage
Hiding to live : Animal Camouflage
1Animals in danger of being hunted and killed have evolved ways to camouflage themselves. 2 Perhaps the simplest type of camouflage is color resemblance, in which an animal's color matches the color of its background. 3 Color resemblance is illustrated by green aphids that live on vegetation, grey- brown lizards inhabiting sandy areas, and black beetles that cling to the bark of trees.
4ANother type of camouflage is countershading light and appear lighter on its top surface than on it bottom surface.6This difference makes an animal stand out against its background. 7Countershading, or the placement of darker markings on the top of the animal, reduces the reflection and allows the animal to blend into its background.8For example, most fish are darkest on their top sides and consequently less visible when alive than when dead and floating belly up.
