Well, think about how Jay Gatsby treats people. He's a nice guy, and he's kind and accepting to everyone. The stickler here is that everyone loves him because of his money, so therefore he should have not been so loving and trusting toward these people, as they led to his downfall.
The Shakespeare quote implies that if you do these things than everything will work out. However, this isn't true for Jay Gatsby. He loves all, but they don't all love him back. Perhaps he trusts too many people, so he doesn't follow that idea, but he does try not to do wrong to others. If anything, this quote compared to the Great Gatsby shows how Gatbsy should have been more discerning and trusted only a few people. Then he would have been better off.
