Staying focused to finish homework can be a challenge! I recommend turning it into a game or challenge, as this can make a big difference. Here are some ideas:
1.) One helpful strategy is to use a short focus timer (start small with 5-10 minutes) and challenge yourself to stay fully focused until the timer ends. When the timer goes off, take a quick break! Stretch, grab water, or do something fun for a few minutes. Then start the next round.
2.) Another great strategy is to break homework into small, doable steps instead of looking at the whole assignment at once. For example, instead of saying “I have to finish my whole worksheet,” try “I’m going to complete the first three problems.” Each small win builds momentum and makes the work feel much more manageable. Once you finish 3 problems, take a 1-minute break, then do the next 3.
3.) I also highly recommend creating a reward system to help you stay motivated. After finishing a task (maybe one page or one subject), reward yourself with something you enjoy. This can be listening to a favorite song, playing a quick game, or having a snack. Some students even enjoy keeping a progress chart where they add a star or sticker every time they complete a homework session.
(Hint: sit down now and create a list of 'rewards' or things you can do for your 1-minute break. This way, you are all prepared for hitting the books!).
