Learn 4 simple, proven focus strategies to help students finish homework and feel more in control. Ideal for students struggling with attention, procrastination, or executive function.
Some of what will help you focus happens before you sit down to study. For instance, taking a break and/or exercising. A break could be a short nap as well. Get a good night's rest. Your brain needs to reset if you have been at work or school all day. White noise drowns distracting sounds but provides some stimulus and reduces the need for stimulating movement. Start earlier and give yourself more time; this way, you are less likely to underestimate how much time you need to be successful.
Now to the 4 simple, proven strategies
- Establish a routine: a specific time and place to study for a preestablished length of time. For instance, 1 hour each day, in the office for one month.
- Break down the large tasks into smaller tasks. Use a checklist/calendar to manage this.
- Frequent breaks for movement. Use the Pomodoro method.
- Choose a place with little to no distractions.
