It is essential for parents, grandparents, and other close adults to read aloud to children because it fosters language development, strengthens comprehension skills, and builds an early love of reading! When adults read aloud, children are exposed to richer vocabulary, more complex sentence structures, and expressive storytelling than they might encounter in everyday conversation.
Research shows that children who are read to regularly demonstrate larger vocabularies and perform better on literacy assessments. Additionally, discussing pictures and asking questions about the story helps children develop critical thinking and narrative skills, while the shared reading experience strengthens emotional bonds and encourages a positive attitude toward books that can last a lifetime.
From a personal standpoint, my mother and I visited the library weekly when I was young, and I looked forward to bedtime stories each night. I continue to read at night all these years later! Reading is a tool for emotional connection and regulation as much as it is about academic success.
