How can I improve coherence, vocabulary, and grammar to reach Band 7.5+ in IELTS Writing?

Hi there, Speed Stars

I’m currently preparing for the IELTS Academic exam and aiming to reach at least Band 7.5 in the Writing section. I’ve taken the test before and received a Band 6.5 in Writing, while scoring higher in the other sections. I believe my main issues are in developing ideas clearly, improving coherence, and using a wider range of vocabulary and grammar structures.

Here are some specific concerns I have:

  1. My Task 2 essays sometimes lack strong cohesion between paragraphs. I’m not sure how to structure body paragraphs in a way that feels logical and fluent.
  2. I tend to repeat words, especially when describing trends or giving examples, and I want to improve my lexical resource.
  3. My sentence structures are quite basic. I want to include more complex or compound sentences without making grammatical errors.
  4. I struggle a bit with time management — I often spend too long on Task 2 and rush through Task 1.

I’d really appreciate any tips, strategies, or examples that could help me improve. If you have suggestions for how to practice or structure my writing over time, that would be great as well!

Thank you in advance for your guidance!

Dear Mr Jonathan, Thank you very much for your thoughtful and informative response. I truly appreciate your guidance and the practical advice you shared. Your points on paragraph cohesion and word variety were especially helpful, and I will certainly work on applying those techniques. The resource on sentence structure is also much appreciated — I look forward to exploring it further. Regarding time management, I often find myself spending too much time planning and not enough on writing. Do you have any specific strategies to help balance this more effectively during the IELTS exam? Thank you again for your kind support. Sincerely, Grace

Thank you for the response, Grace. I’m glad to hear that you found my post helpful. I appreciate your follow-up question. Can you say more about your planning process for the IELTS writing? I’d like to know more before I respond.

Ah, I just realized I forgot to check back earlier — sorry for the delay! About my planning process: I usually spend around 8–10 minutes outlining ideas, sometimes even longer if I’m stuck thinking about examples. Then I rush through the actual writing and worry about running out of time. Do you think I should shorten my outline stage, or is there a smarter way to balance both planning and writing?
