An apostrophe is used in cases of ownership when one wants to show a possession; for example, the of the lady is the lady's hat. For plural possession: the hats of the ladies--- the ladies' hats. We use apostrophes for contractions, which is used when we omit a letter: cannot= can't; will not = won't The ( ' ) is used in poetry. o'ver = over Apostrophe is used in Rhetoric as an address to someone not there, in some dramatic plays, Shakespeare address a woman's angry as "Hell has no fury like a woman scorned. Poets use an apostrophe to address the wind. "Ode to the West Wind."
