Current MD Student with Strong Academic Science Background
Applying to medical school can be a long process but begins with passion and and an intense interest in humanistic practices and where they merge with science. A strong science background is essential. The most common pathway is an undergraduate degree with a premedical focus; biology, chemistry and psychology being the most common. Any route which ensures completion of prerequisite courses will also check off the science background. Standardized testing, mainly the MCAT, is usually necessary. Although some school do not require an MCAT score, it is a good introduction to the self-study habits necessary for getting an MD degree. Healthcare experience is not typically required but gives any applicant the upper hand with personal involvement. It also gives substantial information to discuss when interviews come along. The personal statement is heavily weighted and is your opportunity to say who you are beyond your grades and numbers. Don't discount this part!
Beyond grades, academics, and marketing yourself, it is a large financial dedication and emotional weight. Preparing yourself and gathering all available resources and documents will set yourself up for success and acceptance. Always be yourself! Authenticity, curiosity, and a hunger for helping people are the keys to any medical doctorate degree.
