asked 10/30/24Testing taking assessment- reading comprehension
We would like a tutor that can work with our Freshman son on reading comprehension and writing. We would like someone who can assess his test taking skills to see where the issues may lie.

With test-taking skills, three critical ones are time management, active reading, and question analysis:
1. Time Management: This skill ensures your son can effectively pace himself during a test, reducing rushed answers at the end. A strong tutor can help him develop strategies to allocate time wisely, balancing thorough comprehension with the speed needed to finish on time.
2. Active Reading: This involves engaging with the text—underlining key points, summarizing as he reads, and predicting possible questions. Active reading not only improves understanding but also helps in retaining information for better recall during tests.
3. Question Analysis: Often, students struggle because they misunderstand the question. By honing question analysis skills, he’ll learn to break down questions, identify keywords, and understand what is truly being asked, leading to more accurate answers.
A great tutor can work with your son on each of these skills, ensuring he’s confident and prepared for his tests. If your son is reading on grade level as a freshman, the issue is likely less about basic comprehension and more about how he’s engaging with the text during tests.
Many students struggle with test-taking not because they can’t understand the material, but because they haven’t fully developed skills like active reading—making connections and identifying essential details—or question analysis. I specialize in reading and comprehension, with a focus on helping students develop targeted test-taking strategies. If you’d like more details on my approach, feel free to reach out, and I’d be happy to help!

This is really more suitable for the jobs board than to an Expert Answer. You can post the request to the board, but you'll have to contact the company if you're unsure how because I only contract with them for tutoring and don't know anything about how the student-end website works. But for that matter, I also wouldn't mind if you wanted to message me about setting up tutoring.
