Why do so many vocabulary words have multiple meanings?

When my child is learning vocabulary, it often seems that words have too many meanings to make sense of. How do we understand which useage of the word is the correct current usage?

With multiple meaning words, everything is about context. For example, when talking about paying for a meal at a restaurant, you need to get the bill. The context clearly indicates that it is a fee, or an amount of money to be paid. It is not, of course, the beak of a bird! However, other multiple meaning words have more subtle differences, some of which are found in the original meaning of the word. If you are asked for the most current trend on TikTok, for example, you are asking for the recently popular trend, not an electrical trend, or even the flow of a stream. Usage dictates meaning, and understanding this helps to deepen understanding of vocabulary
