How does the concept of fate versus free will play out in the decisions made by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth?

Consequences of Their Actions: As the play progresses, the consequences of Macbeth's and Lady Macbeth's decisions lead to their ultimate demise. This raises questions about the nature of responsibility:

  1. Are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth fully accountable for their actions, or are they victims of fate?
  2. How do their final fates reflect the themes of fate and free will in the context of moral consequences?

Discussion Points: To facilitate discussion, students might consider the following:

  1. What is Shakespeare suggesting about the balance between fate and free will in the lives of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth?
  2. How does this theme resonate with contemporary understandings of personal agency and moral responsibility?

Tragedy results in death; comedy results in marriage. Tragedy results in the concept of tragic flaw or vice, including greed, cupidity, avarice, hybris, pomposity, or overweening pride, envy or jealousy, rage, fury, murder, theft, and lust, and the act of deception. According to critics, the noble character's flaws cause death of noble protagonists, resulting in death of a realm, a clan, and a culture.
