The article is determined by the how and when the direct object is used
A direct object is a noun or noun phrase that receives the action of the verb from the subject of the sentence. A direct object usually answers the question "what or "whom".
The article "a" is an indefinite article (a, an).
An indefinite article is a determiner of a noun phrase to imply the direct object is non-specific or general.
Example: My favorite animal is a dog because they perform many roles for humans. The article "a" implies "any" type of dog (singular) or all dogs in general as a species (plural)
In contrast, The article "the" is an definite article
A definite article is a determiner of a noun phrase to imply the direct object is specific or previously identified to reader and sometimes implies posession
Example: My favorite animal is the dog. The article "the" implies a specific dog, such as:I have a bird, a cat, and a dog. My favorite animal is the dog. The article "the" also implies a specific dog as identified to the reader in the previous sentence and identifies possession of "the" dog implying "my" dog.
Cats are independent, complex, mysterious creatures; they are prominent in the Louvre in Paris, France. They hate to be the subject of satire and musicals or jokester like CJ. Haitians do not steal pets and eat goat meat not cats.
