You don't need the word 'the' in front of photos; just say: we took photos of many animals. When you use 'the' as the article in front of photos, it leans towards indicating that there are specific photos that you took instead of just lots of photos. For instance, if you said 'I took the dog to the vet' it implies that the person you are addressing knows exactly what dog you are referring to. Whereas if you say 'I took a dog to the vet' they might ask what dog are you talking about. Does that help.
