Think of an Essay as something you are building. The thesis of the essay should be stated in the first one or two sentences. This is your foundation that gives clarity to the purpose of your essay. The reader will know the subject of your essay, and also give the writer clarity on the purpose and structure of the essay. The thesis, once stated, must now be proved by the body of the essay.
Think of the body of the essay as the frame of the structure you are building. Your essay will contain a floor, walls, a ceiling, and a roof. The first idea you present will be the floor of your argument, and it will represent the floor of your structure. The first paragraph in your essay.
Your second paragraph will construct the walls that hold up and define the parameters of your argument, with supporting evidence or examples.
Next the ceiling will be explored in one or more paragraphs that define the limits or expansion of your argument within the subject matter of your thesis, with examples of statistics, opinions, or quotations of professional or expert written findings, books, journals, or articles.
Finally, construct the roof, which will symbolize your own interpretation of all the research and notated material you have presented in proving or supporting
your thesis.
This framework will provide you with the elements of a strong and comprehensive essay if you are thorough and diligent in each step of the process.
