The rise of the caliphate in the fourth century contributed to the rise of Islam in the Middle East. After the death of Muhammad, his sons vied for the position of leader of those who followed Muhammad. His oldest son took charge and began a campaign conquering much of the Arabian peninsula down throughout Northern Africa. This conquest came with a command to convert to Islam as Islam was directly tied to empire.
