How to calculate the Percentage of moisture loss

Hello,

i know this might be simple, but i need help so i know how to do it going forward. I did an experiment and here are my data. The sample is a dry ingredient.

Weigh of tray= 6.40g

weigh of sample= 2.31 g

Sample was heated and cooled.

Sample weigh after heating= 8.35 g

important to note = the sample weight after heating is with the tray

How do I calculate the moisture loss %

First question is Weight of Tray before, with or without sample, if so is that amount represented by 6.40 grams or should it be 6.40 + 2.31? Next question If your total weight before heating is 8.71g can you take the difference to calculate the amount lost? It looks like you need to clarify the total weight before heating.

Hello, thanks for responding 1. The weight of tray is before the sample. So yes I believe we need to do 6.40g plus 2.31.g and next steps I am lost.

I think I didn’t explain my Self good. I should of been more clear what I meant with the dry ingredient. I measured the plate, and the sample of oat flour. I measured the plate first, then I weigh 2.31 g of oat flour. Then we put it in the oven for 1 hour, let it cool after. And weigh the oat flour. From there I need to determine the loss of moisture. Which I don’t know how. My friend did it but I don’t know how he got the results.

Did your friend get around 15.6% or so?

Also are you trying to say that you measured the plate empty it was 6.40 g then put Oat Flour in the plate and reweighed that took the weight of the plate empty and subtracted it from the weight of the plate with Oat flour inside to get 2.31g for the sample weight?
