The main idea of this article is to give a first-hand account about the conditions of the slave trade in Africa during colonial times. Here, we see evidence of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Among Africans, warring tribes took prisoners as slaves, utilizing them as a resource that could be traded. Due to the high demand for slaves by Europeans, King Afanso's kingdom observed illegal trading, free slaves being abducted and sold against his decree. This shows a lack of governmental control. It is possible that the author also wanted the reader to visualize the trading process. Slavery and trading slaves were a normal part of life in Africa, prior to European arrival. However, the lucrative business side of trading slaves with Europeans changed the frequency and amount, making slaves the biggest export. Another possibility is that the author wanted to show African cooperation in the trade, as well as how it was regulated. This article excerpt is for educational purposes of audiences with an average reading level and historical knowledge. The greater purpose is to enlighten the reader's understanding of colonial slave trading by showing cooperation and the condoning of slavery by fellow Africans, while showing prevalence and abuse.
