What is the role or part of zinc sulphate and purified water in a zinc sulphate ophthalmic solution?

As you could have found out by doing a little Google searching on "zinc sulfate ophthalmic solution", the zinc is supposed to be antiseptic. However, in conjunction with other commonly present ingredients, this assumption has been questioned and found wanting. A little more searching may get that info for you too.
