The answer is D, the first democratic assembly in the American colonies. This was the ‘test run’ you might say for the new American nation. Established at Jamestown in July 1619, the House of Burgesses was the first democratically-elected legislative body in the British American colonies. George Washington was a standing member for fifteen years before the Revolutionary War and held the position of burgess or statesmen for Frederick County until 1765 then in Fairfax County until 1775. The House adjourned on June 24, 1776 and would never again achieve a quorum, dissolving to make way for the revolutionary body of leaders. This signaled the end of British political rule in Virginia.
