WAS or WERE with an object of a preposition.

Which is correct?

A) Early in his efforts, nine months of work were destroyed when...

B) Early in his efforts, nine months of work was destroyed when...

"A" sounds correct but wasn't it the "work" that was destroyed not the "nine months" so "B" should be correct?

Thanks.

The origin of my question comes from reading an article in The Hollywood Reporter (Aug. 2020). THR printed "A," and it didn't seem correct to me, but I'm not a grammar expert.

The editors of the Hollywood Reporter were correct :) See my explanation. Yours is a question about subject-verb agreement, which has nothing to do with an intervening prepositional phrase.

The prepositional phrase is NOT irrelevant in some cases - specifically when the phrase is quantified or qualified. "All of the chicken is eaten." "All of the chickens are in the henhouse."

Alex, Your point is about the usage of "all," which can take a singular or plural verb, depending on the context. For example, "All is well." or "All were counted."

Do you mean "All of the chicken WAS eaten?"

In the example, "were" is not being used in the subjunctive. It is merely past tense, passive voice. "If I were a rocket scientist" is in the subjunctive because it is a condition contrary to fact. What I am saying is that the question being asked has nothing to do with the subjunctive. The tense is past tense. The sentence is in passive voice. "Nine months (of work) were destroyed." There is no doer of the action. Who or what destroyed nine months of work? The computer hackers destroyed nine months of work. Now there is a subject, and the tense is the simple past.
