About Olya

I am a professional writer of commentary and literary essays. I have worked as a columnist and essayist for Newsday, The Philadelpia Inquirer, and other publications, including NPR, and have had my blog posts picked up by various online and academic outlets. My writing is also featured in a nonprofit website and in an international European forum.

I am multilingual and I taught essay-writing, literature, and ESL at UNC. I have taught upper level writing classes at other universities. I am also a judge of a literary essay contest, sponsored by a nonprofit.

I enjoy helping others improve their oral and written language skills and am gentle and encouraging of all student efforts. I have worked with elementary students, middle schoolers, high school students, college students and adult professionals.

In teaching writing, I stress clarity, organization, and support as a basis for all good writing. I include lessons on style and grammar when applicable. I relate these methods to all forms of writing and to all the disciplines. My goal is to help students develop the ability to think and write analytically, no matter what the topic and to enable them, through writing, to take part in a larger dialogue about the world.

My students show concrete improvement in their analytical skills and an improved ability to present a unified and tightly structured argument. Improvement is also reflected in their understanding of the writing process and in their own evaluations of their work. My students also report an enhanced interest in and a renewed excitement about the field of writing.

I specialize in writing (both introductory and advanced), including high school and college essays, college application essays, research papers, academic papers, theses, business writing, and literary writing. As a skilled writer, teacher and editor, I can help you produce polished writing that you will be proud to submit.

I also tutor ESL to professionals who want to improve their language skills, and I help students who are aiming for a high TOEFL score to get into selective colleges. I also tutor SAT and ACT, and focus not only on strategies, but teach the underlying concepts the students are being tested on.

I also specialize in working with students who are applying to selective colleges, both undergraduate and graduate, and I help them craft their essay responses on their applications. I also work with applicants to law school and medical school to craft polished essay responses.

I am also a member of the New York Learning Specialists Group.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The English portion of the ACT consists of 75 questions to be answered in 45 min.
I can teach the concepts this part of the test is based on. These are grammar & usage, punctuation, sentence structure, strategy, organization, and style.

I can also teach strategies to move quickly through the test, and the explain the reasons for the correct answers. I can point out the questions the recur.

ACT Reading

The reading portion of the ACT consists of 40 questions in 35 minutes. This section has several long passages to test reading comprehension. The questions include identifying the main idea, drawing conclusions, making inferences, understanding the logic of organization, or explaining words from the context.

I can teach you strategies to quickly get through the test. More important, I can also explain the reasoning behind the types of questions you will be tested on.

Perhaps the best way to master reading is to become a "reader." I ask students to read aloud. I then ask questions about what they read, to ensure comprehension, and I go over new vocabulary words.

SAT Reading

I taught writing on the college level. Have perfect grammar. Am very patient explaining complex topics in a clear and simple way. Can not only teach study strategies, but the concepts your child needs to master for the SAT.

I helped establish a writing program at a college together with the editor of the Best Essays series of books that come out every year. I went on to become a commentary writer and essayist, teaching the occasional advanced nonfiction writing class, and am now also working on a book.
