I am a professional writer of commentary and literary essays. I have worked as a columnist and essayist for Newsday, The Philadelpia Inquirer, and other publications, including NPR, and have had my blog posts picked up by various online and academic outlets. My writing is also featured in a nonprofit website and in an international European forum.
I am multilingual and I taught essay-writing, literature, and ESL at UNC. I have taught upper level writing classes at other universities. I am also a judge of a literary essay contest, sponsored by a nonprofit.
I enjoy helping others improve their oral and written language skills and am gentle and encouraging of all student efforts. I have worked with middle schoolers, high school students, college students and adults.
In teaching writing, I stress clarity, organization, and support as a basis for all good writing. I include lessons on style and grammar when applicable. I relate these methods to all forms of writing and to all the disciplines. My goal is to help students develop the ability to think and write analytically, no matter what the topic and to enable them, through writing, to take part in a larger dialogue about the world.
My students show concrete improvement in their analytical skills and an improved ability to present a unified and tightly structured argument. Improvement is also reflected in their understanding of the writing process and in their own evaluations of their work. My students also report an enhanced interest in and a renewed excitement about the field of writing.

Olya has been helping me improve my writing and English skills. What I like about Olya is that she puts in extra effort in making her students understand the assignments and writing process and that she wants her students to succeed. She knows how to identify the areas where you are struggling. Olya is also very patient and makes you feel comfortable and is always available for questions.
Our sessions have been so far really productive in the pursuit of my studies. Not only in her specialized field, but also in general culture, she is very knowledgeable.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught writing on the college level. I initially taught introductory composition essays. My academic focus of interest was the essay. I helped establish a writing program at a college together with the editor of the Best Essays series of books that come out every year. I went on to become a commentary writer and essayist, teaching the occasional advanced nonfiction writing class. I now tutor and mentor writers, who aspire to high literary standards in their work, in addition to working as a commentary writer on the topic of ethics in all fields of social endeavor. I am also an expert on the personal essay, and have achieved much recognition for my work, both here and abroad. I am currently participating in an international commentary blog on globalization and I have been interviewed about my work. I just love to write and share my enthusiasm for the field. I have worked with all ages from elementary school to adult. I know what the requirements are for college level classes and am patient and always enthusiastic and encouraging. I have helped high school students with their college application essays with measurable results. I also can show a student how to write an interesting, clear, well supported essay on virtually any topic. I have also taught writing on the business and professional level, giving writing seminars at businesses. I have written copy for web sites of well known companies. Another interest of mine is arts writing, which I did as a journalist. I have also have helped art students with their art statement, which describes their work. I am also experienced in working with young grammar school students in the field of creative writing, where I encourage them to let their imagination run free and articulate their ideas. I am fascinated with their child's view of the world. I guess it goes without saying that I am working on a children's book. For my younger students I always try to make learning "fun." As for all my students I am excited to see them not only improve their work, but develop a love for their field.
