I am a professional writer of commentary and literary essays. I have worked as a columnist and essayist for Newsday, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and other publications, including NPR, and have had my blog posts picked up by various online and academic outlets. My writing is also featured in a nonprofit website and in an international European forum.
I am multilingual and I taught essay-writing, literature, and ESL at UNC. I have taught upper level writing classes at other universities. I am also a judge of a literary essay contest, sponsored by a nonprofit.
I enjoy helping others improve their written and oral language skills and am gentle and encouraging of all student efforts. I have worked with elementary students, middle schoolers, high school students, college students and adult professionals.
I specialize in writing (both introductory and advanced), including elementary, middle school, high school and college essays, application essays, research papers, academic papers, theses, business writing, and literary writing. As a skilled writer, teacher and editor, I can help you produce polished writing that you will be proud to submit.
I help craft applications, essays, personal statements for students applying to selective high schools and selective colleges; master's and doctoral programs; law schools and medical schools; and internship, fellowship, and schlarship programs. I help develop ideas to create compelling and original essays that will make you stand out. (After all, it is the essay that often makes all the difference in admissions.)
I tutor ESL to professionals who want to improve their language skills for the workplace, and I help students who are aiming for a high TOEFL score to get into selective colleges.
I also tutor high-achieving students for the ISEE, SAT, and ACT, and I focus not only on strategies, but teach the underlying concepts the students are being tested on. I can also help you do well on the writing portion of these tests.
In teaching writing, I stress clarity, organization, and support as a basis for all good writing. I include lessons on style and grammar when applicable. I relate these methods to all forms of writing and to all the disciplines. My goal is to help students develop the ability to think and write analytically, no matter what the topic and to enable them, through writing, to take part in a larger dialogue about the world.
My students show concrete improvement in their analytical skills and an improved ability to present a unified and tightly structured argument. Improvement is also reflected in their understanding of the writing process and in their own evaluations of their work. My students also report an enhanced interest in and a renewed excitement about the field of writing.
I am also a member of the New York Learning Specialists Group. I am a professional writer of commentary and literary essays. Olya, is a fabulous editor and writer. She is experienced, accommodating, and caring. She is well worth her rate. I highly recommend Olya for help with writing!
I am a graduating senior at Barnard College, Columbia University, and Olya helped me structure and edit my senior thesis. When I first came to her, I had an overload of writing and information, and Olya promptly set me on track in our first sessions. She helped me with my writing skills and emphasized cohesive structure and clear, unambiguous writing. I highly recommend Olya and am grateful for her incredible help, patience, and kindness in the writing process. Olya hits the ground running, arrives on time, makes space in her schedule for her students, and guides them to a finished product.
Olya is always punctual and prepared. Also, she has lots of knowledge base about various topics. I improved my writing and reading skills in a very short time with her. She challenges me and encourages me. Now, I am enjoying speaking, reading, and writing in English. Thank you!
I did feel very well working with Olya. She is a very knowledgeable, capable professional who knows how to combine her teaching skills with a gentle touch of humility and generosity in her interaction with her pupils. While working with her, she infused in me her passion for good English authors and a more proper reading of the press, both of which were not readily accessible to me having been raised and having graduated from college abroad. She taught me how to communicate my ideas in English in a more organized and transparent way in the work environment, and for that I will be always grateful. I truly recommend Olya
I worked with Olya only three times, but I learned so many things from her. She is freindly, patience, and well knowledge. If I can take her class at school, I will take class with her. I am looking forward to see her next year to improve my English skills! I am sure that if I can work With her, my English definitely develop a lot. I will recommend her!!!!!!!! Love her!!
Olya and I did a final edit of my personal statement for an internship program. She was very attentive and made sure everything in the essay was stated in a clear way that also highlighted me. Olya was very good at hearing me explain what I wanted and translating it onto paper, which was just what I needed. Olya is very talented and very efficient, and I really enjoyed working with her. I am happy to say I ended up getting the internship. Olya was so great and helpful and I couldn't have done it without her!
Olya did not just correct my essay, but she also taught me what the reader would expect from reading it. She is a very detailed and patient teacher. She brought me several interesting articles from The New York Times, and we did 2 readings. She explained to me the words that I did not understand. I enjoyed the lesson a lot :)
I had a great time working on my TOEFL with Olya. She was very patient and knowledgeable regarding what I needed to do in order to be prepared for my TOEFL test! I highly recommend her! Thank you Olya.

She explained some new vocabulary words and made them very easy to understand. She is so nice, and friendly, and it was so comfortable to study with her. If anyone is looking for a good tutor, I highly recommend Olya.
Olya has the talent to simplify language. She speaks slowly and clearly. She is always congenial and makes it so easy to learn English. She is very competent, always on time, and always very patient. I am very happy that I found her as a tutor. Thank you!
Olya is an excellent listener, planner and an executer. She listened carefully what parents' goals are for the lesson, examined the student affectionately to plan an individualized lesson suited for the student with the parents' goals in mind. As a result, my daughter loved Olya's class, learned very effectively while enjoying herself and got one step closer to the goal in just one lesson!
Olya is a very patient tutor. She understands my concerns. She is always prepared and she works hard to help me improve my writing skills.
Olya has been helping me improve my writing and English skills. What I like about Olya is that she puts in extra effort in making her students understand the assignments and writing process and that she wants her students to succeed. I've also improved my confidence and got A in my English class and A in my Art History class, working with Olya.
Our sessions have been so far really productive in the pursuit of my studies. Not only in her specialized field, but also in general culture, she is very knowledgeable.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
