asked 06/13/21Can someone please help me with this English problem for The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis?
Question: How does Lewis define the type of laughter known as flippancy?
This is my answer: Flippancy, according to Screwtape, is "the best of all." People who are sarcastically amused don't genuinely laugh; they just assume everything is amusing. They don't take anything seriously, including virtue. This separates them from the Enemy, but it does not make them smarter, contrary to popular belief.
Would this be the correct answer?

It's a very good answer. Your gloss on this could be along the lines of ...."Lewis believes that the essential shallowness of flippancy makes it a barrier to self examination rather than a doorway to it; flippancy arrives at the easiest answer, which is often wrong, and then passes on."
