Hammurabi was the most famous in a long line of Babylonian kings. He was famous as a military leader and conqueror, but known as a just one. He was also known as a law-giver, and his most famous and lasting accomplishment is called the Code of Hammurabi, which many people have noticed is eerily identical to the Law of Moses mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and Torah. The Code was most notable for describing what punishments should fit what specific crimes, and had an emphasis on specific physical punishments for each crime. This idea was all very new at the time (1750 B.C.), and became a feature copied in systems of justice in countries around the world. Because of this, he is considered a foundational figure in the history of law, and every law school in the world includes lessons regarding the Code of Hammurabi to this day. Hammurabi had no direct influence on American history, other than the stated legal roots of certain aspects of the American criminal justice system we have today.
