My goal is to show I value their opinion and efforts and creativity while trying to feed and encourage a curiosity and love for reading and learning. I make sure to encourage students and have them celebrate with me when we get something, when something clicks or even an answer is correct. Confidence boosts helps students keep pursuing knowledge, which is the skill they will need for a long time and might even continue to help them after schooling is over. I hate the idea of failure, though the feeling is real and crops up a lot. Students will always be progressing upward, but I can try to navigate them in that direction in an easier and faster way, with less struggle and more self-esteem and so they can keep up with other students, or blow past them with ease.

I interact with my students with respect and give and take. I try to model the behavior I want to see in them. I listen attentively, letting students complete what they are saying. I validate what they are saying and offer another perspective if appropriate. Most of all, I try to show my students how to think through their ideas, problem solve and come to productive conclusions. When students do not seem to be following the path of thinking to which I am trying to guide them, I use a lot of questions to direct or guide them.

I don't just talk, I ask questions and we have a discussion about what I'm teaching or tutoring. We practice new things 3 or for tutoring sessions in a row to help with memory and recall. I also try to relate what I'm teaching to something that interests the student and use examples from my life as a child or an adult that I think they can relate to.04/27/21
