Your description sounds like you may be forming a Right Triangle, but we need a diagram to confirm this.
If you do form a Right Triangle then the following should apply
Hypotenuse = Slant Height = 10
Height = 8
Base =?
For a Right Triangle, the base can be found by using the Pythagorean theorem
a2 + b2 = c2
Where
c = Hypotenuse = 10
a = height = 8
b = base
SQRT(c2 - a2) = b
