If I want to put an in text citaion for a direct quote from a website what do I put? I know you have to use the author's name and page number for direct quotes but what do you put for the page number on websites? What do you do if it's a website like CDC or something without an authors name?

If there is an author, then you just use their last name, no page number. If there is no author listed, then the website's name is treated as the author's last name. For websites like the CDC where the name is displayed with initials, you typically use the site's full name.

You don't have to include the page number of a website in your in-text citation, since websites don't have page numbers themselves. Only if you are quoting directly from an online article that spans multiple pages and includes the page numbers on the online article itself that was taken from a website for your research should you then include the article's page numbers in your in-text citation accordingly.

Other than that, all you need to include for websites in your in-text citations are: the website URL, the title of the online article itself in quotes " ", and the name of the article's author.

The answer to this question is entirely dependent on the citation style you use.

For example, in the APA style (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/reference_list_electronic_sources.html) the bibliographic entry might look something like this:

Lastname, F. M. (Year, Month Date). Title of page. Site name. URL

There are several different ways to format a webpage depending on its content (see above link).

But it might look like the traditional author-date style: (Lastname, 2021).
