In diabetes, the body has an abnormally high blood glucose level such that the concentration of glucose exceeds the renal threshold. The renal threshold is the concentration of a substance in blood above which the kidneys will start to filter out the substance from the blood into urine. So, because the renal threshold of glucose is 180-200 mg/dl, when the blood glucose concentration is above 180-200 mg/dl glucose will be present in the urine (glucosuria).
