Which statistical test shall I use?

I have two independent groups. Group A and B and for the study I have to determine which one is better. I determine this by seeing which of their observed values are closest to the expected value. Do I use an independent t test to compare their means or conduct two separate chi squared tests to test the observed and expected values.

I would use the independent t-test to determine which group was better. the chi-square is not really good for seeing which is greater or less than.
