High School English Essay Scene Writing Prompt

Imagine that you are setting a story in catacomb. Write a story starter describing the setting and introduce a character. Be sure to include the use of figurative language and imagery to create a mood of suspense, fear, or terror.

Response

Eleanor meandered along the dark, narrow pathway of the bone-filled necropolis. Ghastly shadows danced on the dank walls, trembling in terror before her flickering torch. A pair of red eyes stared coldly at her from a black niche dripping guts of cobwebs. Eerie voices echoed throughout the cavern punctuated by grotesque sobs, screeching cackles, and ghastly screams of horror.

Eleanor’s heart pounded loudly inside her mortified chest. Daggers of fear stabbed her palpitating mind as the panting, prowling monster crept closer and closer. Her cold, clammy hands dripped with sweat as her panicked eyes gawked at a sea of murderous, gaping graves. She was on the precipice of madness.

Trapped underground with no escape, buried beneath the light, Eleanor quickened her pace through the catacomb as the hungry tombs beckoned her deeper and deeper into their gurgling bowels.
