I just saw your question and thought I'd provide a little guidance for how to solve it.

The best way to solve this is by setting up and using a system of equations. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the term system of equations.

I'd choose variables for each number. It's best to label one number as "X' and the other number as "Y."

Use one equation to represent the portion of the question dealing with the sum (addition).

Use the other equation to represent the portion of the question dealing with the difference (subtraction).

In the system, use one of the two methods you hopefully have learned: substitution or elimination.

x + y = 15

x - y = 1

Add the two equations together to get this:

2x = 16

x = 8
